New life comes to the Hollow. This chick looks sleepy; it’s a lot of work being born. She hatched just hours ago, about 3:00 a.m., after spending more than fifteen hours pipping and unzipping her egg. Now she’ll rest in the incubator where it’s close to 100F till this evening, then we’ll move her into a shoebox while she grows her feathers. This was the only chicken egg in the incubator.
She is perched on a duck egg–and all the other eggs are duck eggs, too–and they won’t be ready to hatch till next weekend. Then the duck flock will be raised with the hen till they are all fletched, and the hen finds her way to the layer flock and the ducks to the Firefly Pond.
