Wassailing the Appleman

Apples bright against the winter's tangled wood.

Apples bright against the winter’s tangled wood.

This weekend, with all its mad weather–it’s snow and winds and deep frozen air–and its wild January spirits, this is the perfect time to wassail the apple trees.  “Grandfather Apple, most prolific of all the Hollow’s trees, I hope to find dessicated winter apples upon your boughs for the Apple Man and the wild creatures who depend upon your bounty. Next year should be your good year, blessed as you are by a southern exposure upon a gentle slope with your own private artesian spring, and we hope to find several hundred pounds upon your ancient boughs–enough for cider making, pies and long keeping in the root cellar with plenty to spare yet again for our animal and fey friends in the tangled forest.”
